GST replaced 17 different central and state taxes when it launched on July 1, 2017. The idea was simple: one tax, one nation. But the implementation has 5 slabs, three different tax types (CGST, SGST, IGST), and hundreds of exceptions. No wonder businesses need a calculator.
Here's the fundamental rule that trips up most people: when you sell within your state, you pay CGST + SGST (each at half the rate). When you sell to another state, you pay IGST at the full rate. So an 18% GST on a ₹10,000 sale within Maharashtra means ₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST. The same sale to Delhi would be ₹1,800 IGST.
The calculator above handles all of this automatically — just select the buyer's and seller's states and it determines the right tax type for you.
India has 5 GST rate slabs. Here's a practical guide to what falls in each:
Fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, bread, salt, natural honey, educational services, healthcare services. These are essential goods — zero GST to keep them affordable.
Packaged food (masala, edible oils), sugar, tea, coffee, coal, fertilizers, domestic LPG, economy class air travel, transport services. Basic necessities with low taxation.
Processed food, mobile phones, computers, business class air travel, hotel rooms up to ₹7,500/night. Mid-range goods and services.
Most manufactured goods, IT services, financial services, telecom, restaurants (AC), hotel rooms ₹7,500+. This is the most common rate — when in doubt, it's usually 18%.
Luxury cars, aerated drinks, cement, tobacco, casinos, betting. High-value discretionary items bear maximum GST.
"Add GST" mode: You know the base price (before tax) and want to know the final invoice amount. Example: your product costs ₹1,000 and you apply 18% GST. The invoice shows ₹1,180.
"Remove GST" mode (reverse calculation): You have a GST-inclusive price and want to back-calculate the base value. Example: you paid ₹1,180 for something and want to know the taxable value for your ITC claim. Answer: ₹1,000 (taxable) + ₹180 (GST).
The reverse calculation formula: Base = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). So for 18% GST on ₹1,180: Base = 1180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000.
❌ Applying wrong GST rate
✓ Always check the HSN code for your product. The HSN code determines the correct GST rate. Use our HSN Finder to verify.
❌ Using IGST when CGST+SGST applies
✓ If buyer and seller are in the same state, it's CGST + SGST — not IGST. The calculator handles this automatically when you select both states.
❌ Calculating GST on GST-exclusive vs inclusive price
✓ GST is always calculated on the taxable value (base price), not on the total inclusive amount.
❌ Ignoring composition scheme rates
✓ If you're under composition scheme, you pay 1% to 6% on turnover — not standard GST rates. Use our Composition Scheme calculator separately.
