HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It's an internationally standardized system for classifying products, and in India, your HSN code determines your GST rate. Apply the wrong HSN code and you're either undercharging or overcharging GST — both create problems.
Undercharging (using a lower-rate HSN when the correct one is higher rate) means you owe the difference plus 18% interest plus potential penalties. Overcharging means your customers are paying more than required — they won't appreciate that.
From April 2021, HSN codes are mandatory on all B2B invoices. Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must use 6-digit HSN codes. Below ₹5 crore, 4-digit codes are sufficient for most cases.
HSN codes follow a hierarchical structure. Each set of digits narrows down the product category further:
For most practical purposes, the 4-digit heading is sufficient. Use the search above to find the right code for your product — it will show the applicable GST rate along with the code.
