What is the GST Registration Certificate?
The GST registration certificate — officially Form REG-06 — is your proof that you're registered under GST. It contains your GSTIN, legal name, trade name, business address, date of registration, and the type of registration (regular, composition, casual, etc.).
Think of it like your business's identity card for taxation purposes. Banks ask for it when you open a current account. Customers ask for it to verify your GSTIN before placing orders. Government tenders require it. And you're legally required to display it prominently at your principal place of business.
The certificate is generated digitally — there's no physical certificate sent by post. You download it from the GST portal and print it yourself. It's digitally signed, so the printed version is legally valid.
When Do You Need Your GST Certificate?
You'll need your GST registration certificate in these situations:
- Opening a bank account — Banks require it for business/current account verification
- Applying for government tenders — Almost all government procurement portals ask for it
- Verifying your identity to customers — B2B buyers often verify supplier credentials before placing large orders
- Displaying at your business premises — Legally required under the CGST Act
- Filing factory/trade licenses — Local authorities need it for renewal
- Applying for import-export code (IEC) — DGFT requires GST registration proof
- Setting up e-commerce accounts — Amazon, Flipkart, and other marketplaces require it for seller registration
Step-by-Step: How to Download GST Certificate
Method 1: After Login (For Certificate Holders)
- Go to gst.gov.in → Login with your username and password
- Navigate to Services → User Services → View/Download Certificates
- Click on Download next to your GST registration certificate
- The certificate downloads as a PDF file — it's digitally signed by the GST authority
- Print it for display at your business premises
Method 2: Without Login (Public Search)
If you need to verify someone else's GST certificate:
- Go to gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer (top menu, no login required)
- Click Search by GSTIN/UIN
- Enter the 15-digit GSTIN → Click Search
- The portal shows: Legal name, trade name, registration date, status, state, and business type
- This doesn't download the full certificate but confirms the registration details
For your own certificate, always use Method 1 — the downloaded certificate has the digital signature and is the official document.
What's on the GST Certificate?
The REG-06 certificate contains:
| Field | Description | |---|---| | GSTIN | Your 15-digit GST identification number | | Legal Name | Name as per PAN (company name, proprietor name, etc.) | | Trade Name | Business/brand name (may differ from legal name) | | Constitution of Business | Proprietorship, partnership, company, LLP, etc. | | Date of Registration | Effective date of GST registration | | Type of Registration | Regular, Composition, SEZ, Casual, etc. | | Address of Principal Place of Business | Registered office/main business address | | Address of Additional Places of Business | Branch offices, warehouses, godowns, etc. | | Jurisdiction | State and centre jurisdiction details | | Date of Certificate | When the certificate was issued |
Certificate After Registration Amendment
If you've made changes to your registration — like updating your trade name, adding a new place of business, or changing your mobile number — the certificate gets updated automatically after the amendment is approved.
To download the updated certificate:
- Login → Services → User Services → View/Download Certificates
- The latest version of the certificate will be available
- The old certificate becomes outdated — always use the most recent download
Note: Core field amendments (like change of business constitution or PAN change) require a new registration rather than an amendment.
Displaying the Certificate — Legal Requirement
Under Rule 18 of the CGST Rules, you must display the GST registration certificate prominently at your principal place of business and at every additional place of business.
What "prominently" means in practice:
- Frame it and put it on the wall near the entrance or reception area
- The certificate should be visible to visitors and customers
- If your business is online-only (no physical storefront), mention your GSTIN on your website, invoices, and official communications
For digital businesses: You're not required to print and display if you don't have a physical office open to clients. But having your GSTIN visible on your website footer, about page, and all invoices is considered compliance.
Downloading Certificate for Multiple GSTINs
If you have GST registrations in multiple states (one GSTIN per state), you'll need to download separate certificates for each:
- Login with your credentials (if all GSTINs are under the same user ID)
- Switch between GSTINs using the dropdown at the top-right
- Download the certificate for each GSTIN separately
Each certificate is specific to one state registration.
Provisional ID vs Final Certificate
When GST was launched in July 2017, businesses migrating from VAT/Service Tax received a Provisional ID first. The final certificate (REG-06) was issued after verification. If you still see "Provisional" on your portal, it means your migration wasn't completed — contact your jurisdictional officer to complete it.
All registrations issued after July 2017 (fresh registrations) directly get the final certificate.
Certificate Shows "Cancelled" or "Suspended"?
If your certificate downloads with a "Cancelled" or "Suspended" status:
Suspended
Your registration has been temporarily suspended — usually because a REG-17 cancellation notice has been issued and proceedings are ongoing. File your pending returns and respond to REG-17 via REG-18 to get it restored.
Cancelled
Your registration has been cancelled (via REG-19). You can:
- Apply for revocation within 30 days (REG-21)
- File an appeal within 3 months
- Apply for fresh registration if the above windows have passed
A cancelled GSTIN certificate is no longer valid for business purposes. Don't use it for transactions.
How to Verify Anyone's GST Registration
Want to check if a supplier, buyer, or partner has a valid GST registration?
- Go to gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer → Search by GSTIN/UIN
- Enter their GSTIN
- Check: Status should be "Active"
- Verify: Legal name, trade name, state, registration date
Or use SmartGST's GSTIN Validator for a cleaner interface with additional validation checks.
Red flags to watch for:
- Status shows "Cancelled" or "Inactive" — don't transact with this GSTIN
- Registration date is very recent and the party claims years of experience
- Trade name doesn't match the business you're dealing with
