When Do You Need to Update Your GST Address?
Your GST registration contains two types of addresses: Principal Place of Business and Additional Place(s) of Business. Any time either of these changes, you're legally required to update your GST registration within 15 days of the change.
Common situations that need address updates:
- Your office or shop moved to a new location (same city or different city within the same state)
- You added a new branch, warehouse, or godown
- You closed a branch or additional business premises
- Your landlord changed and the rent agreement has a new address
- Your building was renumbered or the locality name changed
Why you must update: The GST officer can visit your registered address for verification. If they find your business isn't there, it triggers a REG-17 cancellation notice. Also, e-way bills use your registered address for distance calculation — a wrong address means wrong validity periods.
Types of Address Changes
Within the Same State (Non-Core Amendment)
Changing your address within the same state is a non-core amendment. This means it goes through a simpler process and is usually approved by the officer within 15 working days. Examples:
- Moving from one area to another within Delhi
- Shifting your warehouse from Pune to Nagpur (both in Maharashtra)
- Adding a new branch office in the same state
To a Different State (New Registration Required)
If your business moves to a different state, you can't just amend the address. You need to:
- Cancel your existing state registration (or keep it if you still operate in that state)
- Apply for new registration in the new state
- Each state has its own GSTIN — you can't transfer a GSTIN across states
Changing Additional Place of Business
Adding, removing, or modifying an additional place of business is also a non-core amendment — same process as changing the principal address.
Documents Required for Address Change
| Scenario | Documents Needed | |---|---| | Own property | Property tax receipt or municipal khata copy | | Rented property | Rent agreement + NOC from owner (on letter/stamp paper) | | Shared office / co-working space | License agreement + NOC from space provider | | Family-owned property | Consent letter from property owner + property proof | | Any case | Latest electricity bill (not older than 2 months) |
Important: The documents should show the exact same address you're entering in the amendment. Even minor differences (like "Road" vs "Rd" or a different pin code) can cause rejection.
Step-by-Step: How to Update Your GST Address
Step 1: Login to GST Portal
Go to gst.gov.in → Login with your username and password.
Step 2: Navigate to Amendment
Go to Services → Registration → Amendment of Registration (Non-core fields).
If you don't see this option, check if you have any pending amendment applications. The portal allows only one amendment application at a time.
Step 3: Go to the "Principal Place of Business" or "Additional Places" Tab
The amendment form shows your current registration details across multiple tabs:
- Business Details — trade name, constitution
- Principal Place of Business — your main registered address
- Additional Places of Business — branches, warehouses, etc.
Click on the relevant tab:
- To change your main address → Principal Place of Business
- To add/change/remove a branch → Additional Places of Business
Step 4: Edit the Address
Click the Edit icon next to the address. Enter the new address details:
- Building number/name
- Floor number
- Street/road name
- Locality/area
- City/town/village
- District
- State (can't change for non-core amendment)
- Pin code
Also update:
- Nature of possession — Owned, rented, leased, shared, consent
- Nature of business activity — Factory, warehouse, office, retail outlet, etc.
Step 5: Upload Supporting Documents
Upload the required documents:
- Proof of address (rent agreement, property tax receipt, utility bill)
- NOC from owner (if rented)
- Photos of the new premises (some states require this for address changes)
Each document should be in PDF or JPEG format, within the file size limits shown on the portal.
Step 6: Verify and Submit
Review all changes carefully. Submit the application using:
- DSC — for companies and LLPs (mandatory)
- EVC (OTP) — for proprietorships, partnerships, and others
An ARN (Application Reference Number) is generated. Save this number — you'll need it to track the application status.
What Happens After Submission
| Timeline | What Happens | |---|---| | Immediately | ARN generated, application shows as "Pending" | | Within 15 working days | Proper officer reviews the application | | If approved | Amendment is effected, updated certificate available for download | | If officer needs clarification | Sends a notice requesting additional documents | | If rejected | Officer issues rejection order with reasons — you can re-apply or appeal |
Officer Verification
For address changes, the officer may initiate physical verification of the new premises. An inspector visits the new address to confirm:
- Business actually exists at the new address
- Signboard with business name and GSTIN is displayed
- Business activity matches what's registered
If verification passes, the amendment is approved. If the address doesn't check out, the officer may reject the amendment or ask for more information.
Adding a New Additional Place of Business
Besides changing your main address, you might need to add an entirely new location:
- Go to Services → Registration → Amendment → Additional Places of Business tab
- Click "Add New"
- Enter the complete address of the new location
- Select the nature of possession and business activity
- Upload address proof documents
- Submit
You can have multiple additional places of business — there's no limit on the number.
Removing an Additional Place of Business
If you closed a branch or vacated a warehouse:
- Same amendment path → Additional Places of Business tab
- Click Delete next to the address you want to remove
- The officer approves the removal
- Updated certificate will no longer show that address
Special Cases
Address Change Due to Business Transfer/Sale
If the business premises have been sold or transferred and you're moving:
- If the business itself is being sold, the buyer applies for new registration — your registration should be cancelled
- If only the premises changed (you're moving to a new location), use the standard amendment process
Composition Dealer Address Change
Same process applies for composition dealers. There's no difference in the amendment procedure based on your filing scheme.
Address Change After GST Cancellation
You can't amend a cancelled registration. If your registration was cancelled and you're applying for fresh registration at a new address, enter the new address directly in the new REG-01 application.
Common Mistakes in Address Amendment
1. Not Matching the Pin Code
The portal validates pin codes against the state. If you enter a pin code that doesn't belong to the state in your GSTIN, the system will reject the entry. Double-check the pin code.
2. Uploading Expired Documents
Rent agreements should be valid (current). An expired rent agreement raises questions. Similarly, utility bills should be recent — not older than 2 months.
3. Not Including NOC from Owner
If the premises are rented or shared, you almost always need a No Objection Certificate from the property owner. Missing this is the most common reason for officer queries.
4. Forgetting to Update E-Way Bill Portal
After changing your address on GST portal, update your address on the E-Way Bill portal (ewaybillgst.gov.in) separately. The two portals don't sync addresses automatically. Wrong address on the e-way bill portal means e-way bills will show the old address — causing trouble during transit checks.
5. Not Updating with Banks and Customers
After the amendment is approved, inform your bank (for current account records), major customers (who have your address in their vendor master), and any government portals where your GSTIN is registered.
How Long Does the Process Take?
- Typical processing time: 7-15 working days
- With physical verification: Can take up to 30 days
- With officer queries: Depends on how quickly you respond. Each query typically adds 7-10 days.
If your application has been pending for more than 30 days with no response from the officer, you can:
- File a grievance on the GST Grievance Portal (selfservice.gstsystem.in)
- Contact the jurisdictional officer directly
- Escalate to the Assistant/Deputy Commissioner
Tips for Quick Approval
- Upload clear, legible documents — blurry scans get rejected
- Ensure address consistency — the address on your rent agreement, utility bill, and portal entry should match exactly
- Get authentic NOC — if rented, have the owner sign the NOC on proper letterhead or stamp paper
- Apply within 15 days of moving — delay attracts scrutiny
- Put up a signboard at the new premises — makes physical verification smoother
- Keep the old address active until approved — don't vacate completely before the amendment is processed
